These are a few of my favorite things

It is finally Sunday.

This is the end of my workweek, and I could not be happier. Independence day, I learned, lasts about 5 days in my town because it is such a seasonal hot spot. I am okay with this, because I feel validated in the amount of kickin’ it I have been doing!   But I am tired, and I think it’s time to wind down. To keep it simple and relaxed today I have three of my favorite things from my week to share with you…

From top right: Donna’s backyard, Emilia, maitake mushrooms, garlic scapes

1) Backyards

If you have one, I am so jealous. I used to have one, and in retrospect I am realizing I did not use it nearly enough. My friend Donna owns a bed & breakfast in my town, and she is always inviting us over to keep her company, eat a delicious meal, or help her around the house. She is the most extroverted, high-energy, hospitable woman I know and her beautiful house melts your worries away within minutes. Her backyard is dripping with strands of little lights, paper lanterns, candles, and a big, giant, dinner table. It is a small yard, but what she has created from it,  is nothing short of magical.  I think putting a giant dining room table in your backyard is the smartest idea I never had, but now will never forget. The scapes and maitakes are from dinner she cooked, and Emilia is her neighbor’s daughter. A little firecracker that passed out on my lap at dinner, reminding me of when my brothers were small enough to do the same.

2) The FEED USA line at Target

I usually try to donate my time to fundraising or charity events when I can, since I don’t have a lot of money. But, when a store comes out with a clothing line that is affordable and charitable, I’m in. Target and designer Lauren Bush-Lauren have teamed up to make a brand that gives back called FEED. They have it all, clothes, accessories, and even stuff for your home. The clothes are fun, and casual and cheap! Each item purchased feeds families in need around the US. Get into it.
